Abstract:
A Pluvio National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP)-type rain gauge was installed at the Santee Headquarters weather station in September 2010. The Pluvio NADP-type rain gauge was manufactured by OTT Messtechnik GmbH & Co. KG (Ludwigstrasse 16, 87437 Kempfen, Germany www.ott-hydrometry.de).
Purpose:
The purpose of the data set is to provide researchers with 15-minute precipitation totals (as measured by the Pluvio rain gauge) at the Santee Headquarters weather station, located adjacent to the headquarters offices and laboratories of the Santee Experimental Forest. This also provides a basis for comparing data from the adjacent tipping bucket and manual gauges for quality control.

Precipitation events were detected by the Pluvio NADP-type rain gauge by determinining the weight of the collection bucket. The bucket opening was 0.16 meters (m) in diameter and located 1.0 m above the ground. The accuracy and resolution of the measurements were 0.04 and 0.01 millimeters (mm), respectively.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Visual inspection of electronically plotted data and comparison with data from the adjacent manual and tipping bucket gauges at the Santee Headquarters weather station were employed to expose anomalous values.

Methodology_Description:
The Pluvio NADP-type rain gauge (linked to a Campbell Scientific CR800 datalogger) was installed on 9/24/10.

The Pluvio uses highly-precise strain gauges that are hermetically sealed against environmental influences and temperature-compensated to determine the weight of the collection bucket (capacity 250 mm) every 6 seconds. Every minute the Pluvio then calculates a filtered bucket total from the previous 10 raw values. The Pluvio also records the raw bucket total and ambient temperature every 15 minutes, as well as the accumulated precipitation (the differential between the current and previous filtered bucket totals) and instrument status every minute.

The CR800 datalogger queries the Pluvio internal datalogger every minute and records a 15-minute precipitation total (also battery voltage as a percentage, raw bucket total, ambient temperature, total accumulated precipitation and instrument status). The data is downloaded once a week directly to a laptop computer using PC200 software. Periodically (more often during the winter months to prevent damage from freezing) the bucket contents are dumped.
