Santee Experimental Forest, Santee Headquarters Half-Hourly Weather Data, 2006-2017.
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: database
Description:
Abstract:
A suite of climatic variables (including average air temperature, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, net radiation, relative humidity, and total precipitation and maximum and minimum relative humidity) were measured and recorded (30-minute recording interval) from 2006-2017 by the Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger and associated sensors at the Santee Headquarters weather station in Cordesville, SC. The datalogger was programmed to calculate average vapor pressure.

The CR10X datalogger was replaced by a Campbell Scientific CR1000 datalogger on May 25, 2017. On the same date the HMP45C temperature and relative humidity sensor was replaced by an HMP60 sensor. The recording interval was changed from 30 to 15 minutes in the new datalogger program. An RF451 900 MHz 1 W Spread-Spectrum radio and an Omnidirectional antenna were also installed to enable radio transmission of data to a computer in the office. 15-minute vapor pressure and vapor pressure deficit values were calculated using this data according to the FAO (1990) method.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data set is to provide researchers with half-hourly or 15-minute measurements of a suite of climatic variables at the Santee Headquarters weather station, located adjacent to the headquarters offices and laboratories of the Santee Experimental Forest.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Manual rainfall measurements were made using a 0.20 m (8-inch) diameter National Weather Service (NWS) Standard Rain Gauge with its opening at a height of 0.8 m from the ground. Manual air temperature measurements were made using standard max/min and ambient thermometers (at a height of 1.52 m inside a ventilated wooden enclosure).

A suite of climatic variables were recorded electronically by sensors linked to a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger. Rainfall event data recorded by a tipping bucket gauge were calibrated to the total rainfall collected by the adjacent manual gauge between download intervals. Air temperature data were checked against the standard max/min and ambient thermometers.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
Visual inspection of electronically plotted data and comparison with data from other SEF stations were employed to expose anomalous values.

Methodology_Description:
A suite of climatic variables were recorded electronically by sensors linked to a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger and downloaded directly to a laptop computer using PC208 software.

Sensors installed with the CR10X datalogger included: CS500 temperature and relative humidity probe (1.96 m height from ground); Met One 34A windset (2.87 m height from ground); LI-COR LI200X pyranometer (2.93 m height from ground); Texas Electronics TE525WS tipping bucket rain gauge (with its opening at 0.6 m height from ground); and a Radiation and Energy Balance Systems Q7.1 net radiometer (2.64 m height from ground).

At the same time that the electronic data were collected, the adjacent manual rain gauge water level was recorded using a dipstick and then dumped. Max/min and current ambient air temperature were also recorded (at 1.52 m height inside a ventilated wooden enclosure).

The CS500 sensor was replaced by an HMP45C temperature/RH sensor on 8/12/11.

The TE525WS tipping bucket rain gauge was replaced by a TE525MM gauge on 9/16/13.

The LI-200X sensor was removed and replaced by an Apogee SP-110 pyranometer on 5/8/14.

Replaced roof on wooden enclosure for max/min and ambient air temperature thermometers on 5/23/16.

The Q7.1 net radiometer was replaced by an NR-LITE2 net radiometer on 9/30/16.

The TE525MM tipping bucket gauge was replaced by a TE525WS gauge on 5/17/17.

The CR10X datalogger was replaced by a Campbell Scientific CR1000 datalogger on 5/25/17.

Process_Description:
Electronic data were downloaded from the CR10X datalogger (or transmitted via radio from the CR1000 datalogger to a computer in the office) and plotted to check for outliers or anomalies. The tipping bucket gauge totals were calibrated against the amount of rainfall that had been collected in the adjacent manual gauge. Starting in May 2017, 15-minute vapor pressure and vapor pressure deficit values were calculated from the transmitted data according to the FAO (1990) method.

In June 2017 the Santee Experimental Forest began participating in the Smart Forests Network, and we started posting data from the Santee Headquarters weather station to the Smart Forests website, https://smartforests.org/,
