Title:
Santee Experimental Forest, Santee Headquarters Half-Hourly Weather Data, 2003-2005
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: database
Description:
Abstract:
The Omnidata datalogger and associated sensors at the Santee Headquarters weather station in Cordesville, SC were replaced by a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger and sensors in August 2001. In April 2003 measurement of net radiation was added to the suite of climatic variables (including average air temperature, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, relative humidity, and total precipitation and maximum and minimum relative humidity) monitored at this location, and the reporting interval for the datalogger was changed from one hour to 30 minutes. The datalogger was also programmed to calculate average vapor pressure at this time.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data set is to provide researchers with half-hourly estimates of a suite of climatic variables at the Santee Headquarters weather station, located adjacent to the headquarters offices and laboratories of the Santee Experimental Forest.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Manual rainfall measurements were made using a 0.20 m (8-inch) diameter National Weather Service (NWS) Standard Rain Gauge with its opening 0.8 m from the ground. Manual air temperature measurements were made using standard max/min and ambient thermometers (at 1.52 m inside a ventilated wooden enclosure).

A suite of climatic variables were recorded electronically by sensors linked to a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger. Rainfall event data recorded by a tipping bucket gauge were calibrated to the total rainfall collected by the adjacent manual gauge between download intervals. Air temperature data were checked against the standard max/min and ambient thermometers.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Visual inspection of electronically plotted data and comparison with data from other SEF stations were employed to expose anomalous values.
Completeness_Report:
Periods of missing or unreliable data include the following:

Gap in data from 2/21/03 10:00 to 4/2/03 14:00.
All data also missing for 4/14/03 11:00 to 11:30, and 8/1/03 0:00.

Q7.1 net radiometer installed 4/2/03 13:00 (at which point half-hourly observations commenced).

Vapor pressure calculation began 4/2/03 14:30.
Relative humidity maximum and minimum values recorded beginning 4/2/03 14:30, but for 2003 data stops 12/7/03 15:00.

Rainfall data unreliable or missing for the period 1/1/03 1:00 to 4/2/03 14:00; data unreliable from 6/29/03 13:00 to 6/30/03 14:30.

Net radiation data suspect from about 8/1/04 to 12/17/04 because of broken top dome.
Data for all parameters missing for 4/23/04 13:30 and 11/1/04 0:00.

Methodology_Description:
Starting in April 2003 a suite of climatic variables were recorded electronically every 30 minutes by sensors linked to a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger. Data was downloaded directly to a laptop computer using PC208 software.

Sensors installed with the CR10X datalogger included: CS500 temperature and relative humidity probe (1.96 m from ground); Met One 34A windset (2.87 m from ground); LI-COR LI200X pyranometer (2.93 m from ground); Texas Electronics TE525WS tipping bucket rain gauge (with its opening 0.6 m from ground); and a Radiation and Energy Balance Systems Q7.1 net radiometer (2.64 m from ground).

At the same time that the electronic data were collected, the adjacent manual rain gauge water level was recorded using a dipstick and then dumped. Max/min and current ambient air temperature were also recorded (at 1.52 m inside a ventilated wooden enclosure).
Process_Step:
Process_Description:
Electronic data were downloaded from the CR10X datalogger to a laptop computer and plotted to check for outliers. The tipping bucket gauge totals were calibrated against the amount of rainfall that had been collected in the adjacent manual gauge.
