Santee Experimental Forest, Santee Headquarters Hourly Weather Data, 1996-2003
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: database
Description:
Abstract:
Electronic measurement of a suite of climatic variables (including hourly averages of air temperature, wind speed and direction, solar radiation, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), relative humidity, and hourly total precipitation and maximum and minimum relative humidity) began in November 1992 at the Santee Headquarters weather station, located adjacent to the headquarters offices and laboratories of the Santee Experimental Forest in Cordesville, SC. However, hourly data for these variables are only available starting in January 1996.
Purpose:
The purpose of the data set is to provide researchers with hourly estimates of a suite of climatic variables at the Santee Headquarters weather station, located adjacent to the headquarters offices and laboratories of the Santee Experimental Forest.

Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
Manual rainfall measurements were made using a 0.20 m (8-inch) diameter National Weather Service (NWS) Standard Rain Gauge with its opening 0.8 m from the ground. Manual air temperature measurements were made using standart max/min and ambient thermometers (at 1.52 m inside a ventilated wooden enclosure).

A suite of climatic variables (air temperature, solar radiation, PAR, wind speed and direction, relative humidity and rainfall) were recorded electronically by sensors linked to an Omnidata 800 datalogger (replaced in August 2001 by a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger and sensors). Air temperature data were checked against the standard max/min and ambient thermometers.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Visual inspection of electronically plotted data and comparison with data from other SEF stations were employed to expose anomalous values.

Methodology_Description:
Starting in November 1992 a suite of climatic variables were recorded electronically (hourly averages based on a 15-minute scan interval) by sensors linked to an Omnidata 800 datalogger and downloaded via data storage packs.

At the same time that filled data storage packs were collected (and replaced by new, empty packs), the manual rain gauge water level was recorded using a dipstick and then dumped. Max/min and current ambient air temperature were also recorded (at 1.52 m inside a ventilated wooden enclosure).

In August 2001 the Omnidata 800 datalogger and sensors were replaced by a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger and sensors. Data was directly downloaded to a laptop computer using PC208 software. Manual rain and air temperature measurements were performed as above.

Sensors installed with the CR10X datalogger included: CS500 temperature and relative humidity probe (1.96 m from ground); Met One 34A windset (2.87 m from ground); LI-COR LI200X pyranometer (2.93 m from ground); and a Texas Electronics TE525WS tipping bucket rain gauge (with its opening 0.6 m from the ground).

Process_Description:
Starting in November 1992 electronic data were retrieved from a data storage pack and used with a SAS program to generate daily temperature and rainfall values. In August 2001 the Omnidata 800 datalogger and sensors were replaced by a Campbell Scientific CR10X datalogger and sensors, and data was directly downloaded from the datalogger to a laptop computer. These data were also plotted to check for outliers.
