Abstract:
- On June 28, 2006 a new well was excavated in an area representative of the Lynchburg soil series on the left bank of the stream draining Watershed 78 (the Turkey Creek Watershed). A Global Water WL16 pressure transducer (datalogger and linked sensor) was installed in the well, and shortly thereafter hourly measurements of water table level began.

Purpose:
- The purpose of this well installation (and others occuring at about the same time) was to obtain detailed spatial information about changes in water table level over time at locations representative of various dominant soil series on Watershed 78, and to increase knowledge about the relationship of water table to precipitation, runoff, evapotranspiration (ET) and other related eco-hydrologic and biogeochemical processes.

- Original water level measurements were in feet above the pressure transducer (with a precision of 0.01 feet). These measurements were later converted to centimeters below ground surface.

Methodology_Description:
- On June 28, 2006 the Lynchburg Well was installed using a manufactured Blue Tip well point following standard installation procedures. An auger was used to bore a hole approximately 7.6 centimeters (cm) in diameter, the screen and riser pipe were placed into the hole, and a gravel pack was added around the pipe along the screened section and up to about 15 cm below the ground surface. Bentonite clay was added to the top 15 cm of the bore hole as a seal to prevent percolation of surface water. Total well depth was approximately 2.44 meters below ground surface.
A Global Water WL16 pressure transducer (datalogger and linked sensor) was immediately installed in the well, and the datalogger was set to record water level every hour. The well was purged on 7/6/06 at 11:10 and again on 7/12/06 at 10:15.
The well was visited approximately every four weeks and the most recently acquired data was downloaded to a laptop computer using Global Logger II software. Water level readings were manually checked by using a Hydrolite device inside the well after removing the WL16 unit. Starting in May 2009 this measurement was performed using a Solinst Mini 101 water level meter.
4/23/08 Battery failure.
6/6/08 Batteries replaced.
The WL16 unit was field calibrated on 12/19/08.
The WL16 unit was field calibrated on 12/10/09.
The WL16 unit was field calibrated on 11/17/11.
The WL16 unit was destroyed in a prescribed burn on 3/13/12; a replacement WL16 unit was calibrated in the office and installed in the field (with a new pvc riser pipe) on 3/19/12.
